Yachiya Shuzo
Located in Kanazawa City, the Yachiya family has been crafting sake since 1583, making them the oldest sake brewery in Ishikawa Prefecture. Their sake was originally made exclusively for the leading general of the Kaga region, Maeda Toshiie. When Maeda moved to Kanazawa City, he brought Mr. Yachiya with him. In 1628, the brand name “Kagatsuru” was established, giving the nod to the Kaga region itself and Tsuru, the Japanese word for crane, believed to live for a thousand years bringing good fortune and happiness. Like much of the sake produced in Ishikawa, Yachiya’s style is savory and well-structured, with relatively low fragrance levels. In addition to world-class sake, Yachiya is well known for producing Umeshu from locally grown Ume.
